A sound production. Hats off to Sherry Flett for her portrayal of Birdie Hubbard, a nervous southern lady, whose kindness and morality is in stark contrast to the horrible Hubbard siblings, Oscar, Ben and Regina. Laurie Paton, as Regina Giddens, is totally believable. A good solid performance. I recommend this to anyone. "The Little Foxes" reinforces how thorougly unattractive greedy people are. You leave wondering how the Hubbards could live with themselves and then realise, after exiting the theatre, that it was all fiction. They didn't really exist but, of course, they do. Set and lighting also commendable. My only slight whine is the southern accent that doesn't quite stay in place, particularly with Addie and Alexandra Giddens. But that's minor stuff and anyway it was only the 2nd performance of the season. If it's this good after only 2 performances then I feel confident that everyone will, at least like this production, and perhaps love it.
Pauline
Abacot HallAbacot Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07090820649138268798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36910083.post-47212714917517117402008-05-02T13:46:00.000-07:002008-05-02T13:52:51.737-07:00"An Inspector Calls""An Inspector Calls" by J.B. Priestley at the Festival Theatre. I just returned from a performance and YES, from start to enimatic end, it's classic Shaw Festival excellence. You'll leave with more questions than you arrived with. This is a must see. It's looking good for this season. That's not surprising as it is a great playbill this year. I have heard favourable reviews from guests on both "Wonderful Town" and "Getting Married". I understand the set for "Wonderful Town" is wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing it myself on May 16th. This week I am attending performances of "The Stepmother", "An Inspector Calls" and "The Little Foxes". Next week it's "Getting Married". If you have, or are making, a reservation at Abacot Hall and would like to discuss the performances, prior to purchasing tickets, please don't hesitate to call me.
Come and join in the excitement.
Pauline
Abacot Hall B & BAbacot Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07090820649138268798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36910083.post-58052372450293115232008-02-10T07:16:00.000-08:002008-02-10T07:24:34.616-08:00ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR MAY 24 & 25On May 24th and 25th (Saturday and Sunday) 11am to 5pm Abacot Hall will be participating in the 2008 Niagara Artists' Studio Tour. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra will have a summer home, on the lakeshore, in Niagara on the Lake old town, just 1km from Abacot Hall. A 2,000 seat open "bandshell" will be constructed, with additional lawn seating capacity for 16,000 for major concerts, on a 247 acre site on the shores of Lake Ontario. Are we excited????? You bet we are. The Music Festival (as yet unnamed) is proposed as 12 weeks, six of which will feature the two symphony orchestras. Part of the site is the area where the first American soldiers landed in the War of 1812. It is hoped that the music festival will open in 2012 to coincide with the 200 year anniversary of the war. Perhaps it will open with the 1812 Overture! Tickets are not yet on sale - but as soon as they are I bet the line-up will be huge.
Pauline
Abacot Hall B & BAbacot Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07090820649138268798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36910083.post-43779732493453084782007-09-24T05:01:00.000-07:002007-09-29T06:48:10.341-07:002008 Shaw Festival Season Announced! Here it is.....ticket ordering for members opens in November.

Festival Theatre:

"Wonderful Town" music by Leonard Bernstein (April to October)
"Mrs Warren's Profession" by George Bernard Shaw (July to November)
"An Inspector Calls" by J.B. We have seen and done wonderful things. Rode with the Gauchos on the Pampas in Argentina, visited wineries in Uruquay and Chile, got pecked by a Penquin in the Falkland Islands, rounded the Horn, hiked in Tierra del Fuego and seen huge glaciers in the Beagle Channel. We also visited the largest Penquin Colony in Chile, a small uninhabited island in the Straits of Magellan with over 100,000 Penquins (didn't get pecked there). To top things off we hiked in the rain forest in Chile where there are 3,000+ year old trees, and took an incredible horseback ride up the side of a mountain in the Andes to encounter a Condor who soared past within 20 feet of us. Our heads are still in the clouds over the Andes but our feet are back in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Looking forward to welcoming you back to Abacot Hall this season.
Pauline and Mike.Abacot Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07090820649138268798noreply@blogger.com
